What is Jump Index?
Building on the success of the Lengths Gained Jumping model, RaceiQ launched the Jump Index in November 2024. The RaceiQ Jump Index is a metric that quantifies a horse’s jumping ability at each obstacle, in a race, and throughout its career. It compares the efficiency, speed and fluency of a horse’s jumps against all those recorded in the RaceiQ database.
The model uses learnings from our Lengths Gained Jumping model, to objectively rate a horse’s jumping ability as a score out of ten. This enables us to turn complex GPS tracking data into a simple and easy to digest summary of how well, or badly, a horse has jumped in a race.

The benefits of Jump Index
Unlike Lengths Gained Jumping, the Jump Index assesses a horse’s jumping, regardless of the competition. It produces a score out of ten reflecting how well it jumped at an obstacle or in a race. This allows us to compare the jumping abilities of horses that have never run against each other, independent of any differences in tracks, ground conditions, or race distances.
For example, we were able to highlight before the 2024 Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown, that L’Eau Du Sud was a superior jumper to Down Memory Lane. On his two chase starts L’Eau Du Sud had a Jump Index of 8.4, whereas Down Memory Lane had only managed a 7.5. This manifested in the race where L’Eau Du Sud gained an advantage of nearly 10 lengths through his jumping on Down Memory Lane, who was only beaten 8 lengths.
Why is Jump Index so popular?
The Jump Index is built to summarise a horse’s jumping ability in an easily digestible and engaging way. For those with no horse racing experience, the Jump Index provides a simple score to understand why jumping may have an impact on the result of a race.
For those with more experience, the insights produced from the model can help understand the effects of different race conditions on a horse’s performance. This gives invaluable insight into determining whether or not a horse is likely to be suited by the task ahead. Once again adding another dimension to race analysis, benefiting fans, participants and stakeholders alike.
