What is our 0-20mph metric?
The detailed GPS tracking data we receive gives us the perfect opportunity to measure how quickly a horse leaves the starting stalls at the start of a race. Using the speed data produced by the trackers on each runner we can capture how many seconds each horse takes to reach 20 mph. Why 20 mph? Our data scientists carefully chose a threshold so the output is most reflective of a horse’s reaction time before tactics can hold any influence.

The benefits of 0-20mph
They say horses can win or lose a race at the start, and now we can objectively measure the impact the start has had on a result. Using this metric we can:
- Identify horses who are routinely fast or slow out of the stalls
- Highlight when a horse’s start has cost or won them a race
- Determine where the pace of a race is likely to come from
Why is 0-20mph so popular?
For the more casual fans, the 0-20 mph contextualises a significant moment in a race, in language more relatable to those with less horse racing experience. For those with more experience, it provides an excellent opportunity to assess how the start could impact the result of a race.
This metric provides the first piece of the puzzle for broadcasters, participants and racing fans when it comes to understanding the narrative of a race. Whether it’s for an insight into race tactics, a horse’s chance of winning, or purely illustrative purposes, the 0-20 mph has quickly become a regular feature in race analysis.

“There is no such thing as too much data. I’ve been a professional racing analyst for over 20 years, but even experienced eyes will miss plenty of relevant details and nuance. Well harvested data has a great capacity to inform, surprise and improve understanding. Sophisticated utilisation of data is an area that is only going to grow in racing.”
